While in basic and AIT, I wrote and received letters from a male friend who was going through basic at another base

I had two friends in my unit who started dating and got married when they were both E-4's. She finished her ROTC and got promoted to 2Lt., and he stayed an E-4.

Granted this was all between 1994-1998 and the rules might have changed a bit.

Basic and AIT are so much different than when you are in your real unit! As long as you two are not in the same unit while in training you are fine. Plenty of people are in relationships prior to joining or once they are in. Once you have completed training your only real concern would be enlisted persons dating officers. That is a no no. but, otherwise don't sweat it. Basic and AIT is nothing but mind games. They can't kick you out for dating somebody you have been with if you are not in the same unit. AIT is just a little more relaxed. Your actual unit or duty station is a lot different. It will be like a real job and they don't care what you do as long as you dont make yourself or the Army look bad, and you do what you are told, when told. Don't sweat it. You can write back and forth. just tell them it is your brother or cousin. Be careful though. Don't get caught lying.

Maybe the Army is different. My TI wrote me when I had gone off to tech school and wanted to start up a relationship. There is a problem with an officer and an enlisted, but I've never heard of same rank problems while in basic or AIT. There are many married folks that come into the service all the time.

In training this is true. You are a PVT, bottom of the to tum pole, so everything is micromanaged. You can be in a relationship with someone who is in and join. The only issues are is that person over you at work? This shouldn't be an issue for you. If you're married to a soldier and want to join, you can. But if you have a child together, then there are some more in-depth rules. But, you can still join. Hope this helps.

This is mainly between people in the same unit, especially between a superior and one of much lower rank (i.e. private or specialist). Sexual harrassment and the temptation to give or recieve sexual favors for promotion is the issue that the military is trying to avoid. People in my unit got married quite often. It's much more of an issue with commisioned officers, actually.
If you're in Basic and you write to him from another company, particularly in the same fort, you might try to meet up. Or you tell each other what type of training that is coming up. When I went to Basic they did make sure that the letters were not between people in the same fort, at least. In AIT, it really isn't an issue. Sounds like you're not in Basic now, anyway, so write. Trust me, letters keep soldiers going, whether in training or in war. If you write and the drill sergeants think it's inappropriate, they will give your boyfriend the letter at a later date.

Basic training is just 9 weeks, don't worry. Depending on where you go for AIT, you will be able to get away with writing. I went to Ft. Meade and nobody there cared if you wrote someone else in another AIT or in basic. I wrote my cousin in basic while I was in AIT all the time. Drill sergeants are mostly trying to scare you. Try writing your boyfriend. The worst that will happen is that his letter will be held until he graduates. Its illegal for them to throw it away or to keep it indefinitely, and they certainly cant punish you worse than a few push ups for mail.
When I was in basic, one kids brother sent him a box full of candy and porn as a joke. Whenever we get packages, we are forced to open them with the drill sergeants. The drill sergeants knew the nature of the joke, laughed, and made him do a few pushups. The box of porn and candy was returned to him the day we left for AIT.

It's a scare tactic. Write whoever you want. Once it's in the mailbox it belongs to the postal service. Inform the DI that interfering with the mail is a federal offense and the Postal Inspector will be making him or her a visit. And yes Postal Inspectors are cops. They can arrest you and take you to jail.

yes solders can have relationships as long as they both are of the same status. the illegal fraternization's are between officers and enlisted. once out of basic and training then it is fine, this is only a few months so hang in there.

It's probably true in basic training... but not beyond. Yes, you can have a relationship.... but if you're both in basic training at the same time, you'll be communication-impaired until you both graduate!
