i own a repair shop, and try changing the gas filter on it,and the air filter ,either one of these will cause it to run like this ,both are cheap parts to buy,and easy to replace also, that would be the first thing id check ,if i was working on it,good luck i hope this helps.

First try replacing the Fuel Filter and checking the Air filter...

once those are done try again if still doing it you may have a Crankposition sensor problem...

this could be something as simple as grease and or dirt between the sensor magnet and the gear teeth tha trigger this part....

it is mounted on the transmission near the top on the drivers side of the bellhousing... remove and clean it with brake cleaner or carburator spray cleaner and a rag .... also spray into the hole you took the sensor out of

shooting compressed air in there also will work to clean it off the inner area..

now put back and try again.. if it now goes over 2000 and doesn't act up its fixed...

if it does still act up remove it and try this... put the sensor in the freezer in a plastic sandwich bag for a few hours then while still cold install on vehicle try starting...

run it for about 3 minutes then rev... will it go past 2000?... now run it about 25 minutes now using a hair drier on high heat pointed at it super heat it and try the above 2000 RPM test again... if it doesn't go past 2000 replace this sensor...

these commonly go bad at 8-10 yr stand point

It very well could be a clogged catalytic converter. That's where I would start checking.

Check your throttle body. Maybe stuck.
