The prevalent one is an atom symbol. Funnily enough, I just had a Christian pray that my city and all its inhabitants (including me) get attacked by an atom bomb when I brought up the wonders of science. From the mouth on one Mr. Earl D:
"I was taught in school Pluto is a planet
Why is what I was taught all wrong now
Is that what your science is all about
That, and A-BOMBS
May one strike your city, maybe that'll make you realize what SCIENCE is about."
And in the form of prose poetry, no less. I wonder if it will have the symbol on it?! ;)
I believe the atom symbol fails for many reasons, one being that it is too industrial-looking. The Darwinian fish is terrific but only covers one aspect of the theist/non-theist spectrum. The ring is a nice idea but a bit simple. In all honesty, any symbol for atheism can only serve to represent something we are NOT as opposed to what we are. If anyone has some good ideas though, I'd love to see them.

There is an official symbol for atheism recognized by the U.S. military, and is approved to appear on military tombstones. It looks like an atom with an "A" on it. Of course, not all atheists approve of this symbol, but it's the one that the U.S. military uses to denote atheist soldiers.
I was looking for the official government site, but Wiki has it, too. Here you go. Just scroll down the page a bit:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USVA_emblems_for_headstones_and_markers
Ironically, on the above site, the atheist symbol is found under the subheading, "Religious Headstone Symbols".

Of course, it's very optional.... the military uses the sign of an atom with an "A" in the center... but one of the fun parts of being atheist is that anyone can symbolize it any way they want!
I also like the darwin fish...

As an honest person I have to say that I have no respect for the cross and what it represents.
because throughout history it has represented murder, killing, crucifying people, a horrifying and bloody thing to carry around with.
As for atheists, am honest to say I certainly hope you dont have a symbol hon. Symbolism is labelism and I hate labellism.

I believe it's the symbol of an atom, but I have a FPU decal on my car...and it gets noticed!
American Atheists also use the atom with an "A" in the middle.

Atheists keep telling me that they are not a religion, so it doesn't matter anyway. They are not a group. They are not a cult. They are not anything except individual people that don't believe in any god. So, just how could they have a symbol?

Is there a symbol at all? It wouldn't make any sense for there to be one. However, I would recommend a "No U-Turn" sign. It'll be catchy AND interesting!

It is a picture of an atom with a capital letter "A" in the center.
