Yes, your insurance company will find out as soon as you have a driver's license and they will need to either rate you (rates go up) or exclude you so you would not be covered to drive their car. Since you would not want to be excluded, might I suggest getting a job and paying for the difference when the insurance increases? If you want to drive, you should show some responsibility and pay for your own insurance. Hope that helps!

RE Is it possible to obtain a learner's permit without having my parents' insurance rates go up?
I am a 16 year old in NY and my parents do not want me to obtain a learner's permit because they are afraid that their insurance rates will go up and they cannot afford it now. Now, a friend told me that I could go to the NY DMV without my parents and get a learner's permit. Is this possible? I would like a learner's permit not only for the ability to drive, but also as a solid form of photo ID (like, instead of a passport). What should I do about this?
PS. My parents won't be convinced.

There are two problems. The age of computers. NYS computers are hooked to insurance companies. MY Ny insurance carrier automatically assumed my son was driving my car as soon he got his license. The only way around that is to get a seperate residence and insurance yourself. Even if you have your own car the insurance company will assume that you "might" drive your parents car from time to time even if just to go get milk. The second problem is since your under 18 you will need your parents to sign off on the dmv papers to get your permit. Acording to NYS your a minor. The last issue is the insurance companies assume any licensed driver with the same address on their license application as another person will drive their car and rate the policy as such. Most will "surcharge" if the driver is under 25 some go as high as 30. Welcome to NY and the age of computers..

Most insurance companies will insist they add you weather you are licensed or not when you become of age to drive, at least that is what they did to me when my son turned 16, and then again when my daughter turned 16, check with insurance agents in your area, if you aren't covered by another carrier, they might add you on to your parents account.

getting a license isn't going to make the insurance rates go up, its if they add you to their insurance policy, thats the problem

i'm a coverage agent in the state of ky, i sell coverage for national coverage. national as a compayn does require the driving force to be further t o the coverage because of the fact at that factor the driving force will become a skill hazard. every time they get in the back of the wheel there is an threat of a twist of destiny occuring. i might think of it is the comparable with any organisation anymore. countless situations people jsut do no longer say something to maintain from paying the premuims.
