I currently have vinyl on my bathroom floor and would like to put ceramic tile on top of this, but I worry that the 1/4" additional height of the tile will not allow for a tight seal for the toilet to the waste line in the floor. I really don't want to have to change the subfloor or any plumbing, if possible.

Oh, you don't have to change the sub or anything, there is an extention you can buy for your toilet seal ( i think it is called a boot or something). go to a HARDWARE store, not home depot, and explain it to them. it isn't very expensive, my installers use it often when we go over vinyl with ceramic. it is common and easy to do. :)

Your biggest worry should be the subfloor. The current subfloor is probably not thick enough to properly support ceramic tile. If it isn't thick enough, the subfloor will flex when walked on and the tiles or grout will crack or break. You also need concrete backerboard to insure proper adhesion of the thinset or mortar used for holding the tile. The toilet flange can be raised by using an extender ring. These come in different thicknesses to raise the height to match the tile floor.

You must remove the vinyl. It isn't that hard to do. You need to have an inch of underlayment that does not move. Use a superflex thinset unless it is over concrete. Use can use a thicker wax ring if the build up is too much. Usually reg size is fine (1/4 cement backer board cemented over the existing 3/4 subfloor.)

I can only think of 2 options:
1 they make taller wax dough-nuts, just for this type of problem,
which would be the easiest way OR you could tile up to the toilet, which means alot of irregular cuts.
The other thing you didn't mention was, are you going to install a cement backer board under your new tile, it really is recommended
Good Luck

Generally, the only changes needed are: 1.) your new wax ring, purchase one that has a horn /plastic sleeve on it; OR 2.) add a basic wax ring on top of the one w/ the horn. Suggestion: If your budget allows replace your stool w/ a 16"-17" high bowl! Usually the bowls sit 12"-14" high. Yes, I know we're only talking about a FEW inches but the results are immediately noticed! I install an avg. of 2/week of the "taller" ones from people using one at a friends house!

It will make a difference, but can quickly and easily be fixed with a new flange. You will have to replace that anyway so it shouldn't be an issue.

Use longer flange bolts and an extra -thick wax gasket.
