Let's not forget the clinical social workers who actually do the vast majority of counseling in mental health and social service agency you will find. Always start with a therapist-whether a psychologist or a social worker (both are covered by insurance)-and they will refer you for meds if they feel it's necessary.

ok some people don't know the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist They think its the same thing but no they are wrong. If you want someone to talk to you go to a psychologist, they talk to you and help you think through what you are going through. On the other hand a psychiatrist will talk to you briefly but their job is to give medication to help with any mental disorders. They really don't have time to talk, thats what a psychologist does talk and a psychiatrist diagnoses any mental problems. Final answer you want to see a psychologist since you want to talk. If he feels you have depression and you want meds to help then he'll refer you to a psychiatrist. whatever you do don't take any meds from a general doctor for any mental issues, because they don't' specialize with psychiatric meds. i hope this helps and if you have any other questions feel free to email me :)

You did not mention the trouble you are having. If you believe you need medication for bi-polar , depression, or etc., then a psychiatrist will help. However, if you want to have sessions regarding relationships, work stress, or etc. then a psychologist is the best person. They are not licensed to prescribe medications. There are times, when a psychologist will refer you to a psychiatrist or vice versa.

i bypass to a psychologist. per chance you should change to a distinct one. i bypass to a woman, so i do not have that style of problem. yet being uncomforatable including your psychologist is going to get in the way of your progression. you should inform him that you'll be more beneficial comforatable seeing a woman, and ask him if he can make any recomendations. Having the right psychologist is truly major. you shouldn't be able to do any artwork on your self once you're too demanding about him.

Not all psychiatrists are monsters, but I still say you ought to see a psychologist first. A straight-up psychologist can't prescribe you meds, so you don't need to to worry about that so much.

If you just want to talk I'd consider a counselor or therapist. Many areas have opportunities to do this for cheap or free. If you are of a particular faith, many faiths have counseling services.

Just keep in mind that if you don't click with the first person you speak with you can always try someone else.

Your family physician can help you make the correct decision about what type of specialist you should see.

Just mention to your family doctor what some of your thoughts or feelings are and they you think you need to see a specialist but are not sure what type you need. You do not have to get too detailed in your initial visit, just a good idea to check in and get a referral.
