at 13 months they should have a handful of words...like maybe 'dog', 'hot', 'mama', 'dada', 'no'...by 15-18 months the average is 10-20.

Most experts say about 5 words is the norm. My daughter is 16 months and can say five words, but she doesn't talk very often she has some other very unique ways of communicating (without whining). Also I've heard that if babies are taught to use sign language then sometimes they don't actually say the words until they are much older. My doctor recommended reading to my child a lot, he said eventually she will learn to use more and more words in her own time. I think that if your child seems to be developing in other areas without concern then I would not be concerned if they don't say much just yet, give it time, one day you'll wake up and she'll be telling you all sorts of stuff.

My daughter is 12 months old and can say 4 words. At her pediatrician visit last week, the doctor told us 3-4 words is the normal range. I hope this helps!

My grandson at 1 yr, was not saying a whole lot, maybe 4 or 5 words, but that doesn't mean he couldn't communicate. His parents taught him to to baby sign. It is soooo cute to watch. Now he's 14 months and he's added about 12 more words, but he still signs. Hope this helps

in my experience my daughter could speak very well at a year old with big words and understand what text to put them in. my son was a different story he had his own way of communicating with his sister and she would tell us what he wanted. he didnt start really talking till almost three. so really there isnt an average they all are different but they should be saying basics like mom, dad, bye bye, hi things like that.just let the baby be who they are and continue to talk to the baby and they will pick up on it. they are very smart

10-20 words at One is completely incorrect! That is exceptional not an average...
"walk by One, Talk by Two"
I agree with Mama, dada, dog and maybe a few everyday words but don't worry about it he/she will talk soon enough. Just read and and use flash cards

Dont worry to much every child to their own pace. If you daughter is saying mama papa and simple sounding words that she hears frequently and she is happy and making all the noises let her go at her pace.
