Ozone is present thoughout out atmosphere. In upper layers, ozone acts as a filter, blocking out ultraviolet rays and helping to make our planet more habitable. This ozone is depleted by certain chemicals that we have released in to the atmosphere, in particular, chloroflourocarbons (CFCs). Many nations have outlawed the chemicals that are primarily responsible for this (i.e. the kind of freon that used to be in almost every kind of refrigerator, freezer, and air conditioner.) Unfortunately, CFCs are just a catalyst for the reaction that destroys the ozone molecule - the CFCs that are still around will continue to slowly destroy ozone for many years until those CFC molecules get high enough up in the atmosphere to themselves be destroyed.

Ozone is also an element of pollution from internal combustion engines. It is an irratant (makes your lungs hurt).

Unfortunately, you can't take ozone out of the air around us and put it up in the upper atmosphere.

So, down here in the air we breathe, ozone is a bad thing. But the ozone layer in the atmosphere is an important part of our environment.

Some gases that we're giving off like Co2 or CFC's cause the ozone layer to go thiner and start to make holes. The C02 also builds up and captures the heat that goes through these holes and prevents it from going back into the atmosphere (hence global warming.)
