I am working with a brand new Gateway computer. It came with Windows vista on it. I do not like this OS and wish to install a full retail version of XP Pro. When I boot from the CD it starts the install then quits. I get a message saying the computer has been shut down. All I want to do is get rid of vista and install XP on this computer. I was told my Gateway that the computer has a "solid hard drive" and that was part of the reason I was having troubles. But they couldn't really help me out because the computer came with vista. Any suggestions?

This wont easily be done, this your trying to do a down-grade, which is something microsoft doesn't like. What you will end up needing to do it format the hard drive with vista on it and then install the xp operating system.

But you must make sure that the xp cd you are using is not install on another computer otherwise you will run accross problems.

If Vista came "bundled" with your computer, I'm going to assume you don't have a CD. Before you proceed to uninstall it, I would go to the seller to see if you could get Vista on a CD in case you want to reinstall it in the future.

Re: XP - you will have to buy. Here is a price:

I would suggest backing up any files you created and wish to save, then go for a format and a clean install.

when you boot with the disk in the cd drive and the interface has loaded instead trying to choosing install choose format and install instead, formatting first will get rid of vista then install xp

When you install operating systems, you cannot install an older O/S over a new O/S. You're best bet would be for format the HD and start from scratch. Just make sure you keep all the drivers for your devices.

If I was you , I would go with XP, because Vista has too many issues to work out yet. On this Q&A forum, tons of people have what to do about their troubles with Vista. So, there you go, the choice is yours.
