The potential in the nursing field right now is amazing! There is a nursing shortage, so job security is fantastic. There are so many possibilities for careers in the nursing field beyond what most people think of when they consider nursing. Nurses with advanced practice degrees, like nurse practitioners, nurse midwives, and nurse anesthetists can function very independently (varies state by state) and at a very high level in the medical community. Did you know that the interem Army Surgeon General just appointed is a nurse? She is a nurse anesthetist. So I would say support your child's plan. Why do you think they should seek another calling? Nursing is a very noble, respected profession with wonderful opportunities. Doctors aren't the only people in the medical field who call all the shots, make big decisions and earn large salaries. Honestly, I think just the rewards you get from working with people and helping them through their sickness and knowing you make a difference can be better than any title or salary offered! I encourage you to do some research about nursing and learn about all the great things it has to offer.

I am a registered nurse, and have been for 15 years. It is a very interesting and rewarding field of work, and there are many areas to go into...school, hopsital, home health, clinic, research, etc. Everyone can find a niche for them, and the pay is great. It is, however, very hard work, and you actually use more "people skills" than technical skills. Another advantage is that a nurse can find work ANYWHERE, and can receive good pay for it. But, I feel that nursing, like teaching is a career that you should really love and enjoy, or you shouldn't do it. The best bet for your child would be to work as a nurse assistant to see if he/she really likes it.

I've been a nurse for 7 years and I have never regretted one moment. If it was my child that wanted to go into nursing I would encourage it. It is a lot of hard work, but it should be... you are responsible for people's lives. All that work pays off though when your patients pay you a compliment or you do save someone's life...it's a feeling you never forget.

Yes it is a great idea and if your child is interested in it that is even better. You should always encourage your child to do something that interest them. Nursing is a noble cause and is rather profitable as well.

There is a great nursing shortage right now.

It depends where are you,and what is the interest of your child. Nursing is a noble profession and is the one which has transferable skills. It is the profession which is in great demand all over and this demand will continue to be strong. I would definitely encourage the child to go for nursing if it is their interest area.

what is wrong with being a nurse? I think it is a great calling. Helping people. Nurses have much more patient contact than doctors. I think you ought to encourage your child in nursing and don't be so uptight.

nursing school is expensive so if you're paying the bills i would have them work or intern at a nursing home or in the field they were interested in so they can see what it might be like. i would also have them perhaps visit a univeristy nursing class or meet with some students, many colleges have these once or twice a year of prospective students so they know what they are getting into.if schools in your area do not have your child do some research into what it really is like at these schools, magazines/interviews on line or even with medical professionals that you know would i'm sure answer questions about there field.
if she does these things and still wants to i think you should support her.

if my child wanted to go in to nursing, it would be fine by me . my wife has been a nurse for seven years. the pay is pretty good but the satisfaction of helping others is the best reward. besides who will take care of you when you get to old?
