I just bought some buttermilk and it smelled funny so I dipped my finger in it and it tasted sour. I just want to know if this normal.

Yes - Buttermilk is the liquid left over after producing butter from full-cream milk during the churning process. It has a slightly sour taste. It is quite popular as a refreshment in Northern Europe and South Asia, particularly in Afghanistan, Punjab and the Pashtoon belt in Pakistan and in India. Many breads are made with buttermilk, and it is also used in creamy soups and sauces.

yes, it has a sharp, vinigar like taste. I take my raw milk, straight from the cow, and make buttermilk by adding a little vinigar. I am not sure what is used to sour it commercially. Its a bit thicker than plain milk
