vonage is VoIP or Broadband and Skype is SIP....you dont usually have the computer on when you use VoIP, but with most SIP you need the computer on....I got both....and I love both.....
there are many VoIP providers out there now....and they all competing right now with each other, some are better then otheres when I comes to customer service, but in principel they all the same....I use my VoIP just like a regular phone, ! base-phone with firewall/build-in router near the Computer, and 6 extension phone in all othere rooms in the house, and one blue-tooth, I can take with me....around the neighborhood....its only 16.54 a month (I pay yearly)
if you use SIP all calls are fre betwen PC+PC calling...here are a few providers...

Vonage and Skype are both VoIP providers. Vonage uses a proprietary form of SIP, while Skype utilizes the point-to-point networking scheme popularized by filesharing networks like Kazaa. Contrary to a previous response, Skype does _not_ use SIP or any of the other standardized telephony protocols to convey info through its network, so you must have Skype software and protocols installed to access the network.
Vonage does use SIP, but the settings are supposedly a tightly held secret, to make it difficult to program a generic phone adapter to use Vonage.
