they tell you what you want to hear when you need to hear it. If he cant give you a straight answer hes stringing you along. Good luck

Think of the purpose of a string. It allows for something not to be close ,but it is still attached so that at any moment ones feels it is getting too far, it can be pulled back in or checked to see if the connection is still there by tugging it.
This is why your friends say he is stringing you along: he does not want you ,but since he has some idea that someone else may want you and you are not bad -just not what he wants totally and just in case what he thinks he wants does not work out, at least he can always settle for you. Does not sound nice does it? That is what he seems to be doing to you according to your observing friends. If your friends are telling you this, you may want to listen to them because this is a creepy thing to do to someone.
They are telling you to cut the string and you should. If you need to cry, then tell them that you need their shoulders until you get over him.
Learn to love yourself. If you do not think that you are worthy of total love, why should a guy think that of you?
"A person can treat you the way you do not want to be treated only once without your consent ;thereafter, they have your full consent."

"Stringing along" means your ex is being nice to you or letting you think you could be an item again just until someone better comes along. It's not a good thing to string people along. (like fish on the line)

He is leading you on to believe something that isn't. He is using you. Cut off the string and move on.

I think it means using you or just dragging you in to stuff or liking you by force
