Just turned 28 yrs old. Have a BA from a very large midwestern state school. While I have done some post-grad work, I have not yet completed an advanced degree. Have some skill with far-east languages. Currently an office peon/accountant. Single, no kids.
Wanted to join the military 5 yrs ago, but my plans were interrupted by personal problems. Would prefer not to get into details. Suffice it to say they are now resolved & would not affect my ability to serve.
I am civic minded & already volunteer for city gov't. Would like to take on something more ambitious. Military service seems the natural way to go. But can I even serve in the military? Is age a problem? If no, what is the best way to serve?
Dad & late grandpa (via grandma) have conveyed fondness for Navy. This in spite of the fact that dad was a Sea Bee during Vietnam while grandpa served in the Pacific at the height of WW2. Would like to follow them to the Navy.
Would love to hear from people serving. Thanks in advance!

Some great answers so far! Very encouraging. Thanks espcially to Scream, Nick, Navy & Mrsjvb.
Should elaborate a little:
-My degree was in Poli Sci with an emphasis on global studies and a minor of East Asian Studies. Curious to know if this will increase/decrease my options.
-Will definitely talk to a recruiter. Best tip so far is that there is a difference between officer & enlisted recruiters. I had no idea.
-I'm in solid physical shape, that's not a concern.
-Currently cramming for the ASVAB. Aside from testing well, what are some ways to influence where I will be stationed? I realize I don't get to pick the mission.
But I have friends in Okinawa, while the girlfriend & family live in California. So I WANT to live in Okinawa or CA. Any hints on how to influence this fact (before signing up) would be greatlly appreciated. Hope that makes sense.

No your not, a lot have signed up just for the recent war conflict. If there was a draft you would be drafted up until you were 42 years old. This could happen anyway. Older recruits have a little more sense of responsibility and get the better ranking jobs anyway. Rank is reached easier.

What is up with all the civilians and this draft crap?? Give it a rest people. Recruiting goals are all being met, so go enjoy your dinner!
Now that I can answer your question with the correct answer.....Yes, if you go in as an elisted person the age cut off is 35. Since you have your BA degree you may enter the Navy as an officer, BUT depending on the program you are interested in there are age cut off's younger than 35. Sometimes they will waive age requirements depending on the person and the program. If you are interested in officer programs make sure you ask for and only talk to an officer recruiter.
If this is what you would like ti do, go for it, it's a great life. Enlisted or officer offer different opportunities, don't rule either side out util you see what is available to you.

No the cut off age limit is 35 years old. With your experience with volunteer work and your schooling, you can go into any branch at an already higher level. However if you wanted to go into the military and dont look forward to going to war, then yeah I would choose the Navy. Also their basic training and AIT are the easiest around.

hey man,
your not too old to join. I'm enlisted in the Navy. your cut off at 35 years old. dont talk to your local enlisted recruiter. he will try and get you to go enlisted. talk to an oso. go to the navy web site and click on the officer track. theres a bunch of stuff you can do. being an officer isn't a bad way to go.

No you are not. Since you have a college degree, call the recruiter and ask about becoming an officer.

nope you are not to old. I think the age is like 32. And then you would not be able to join. But I say go for it. I just got out of the army.

my husband enlisted with a 4 year degree at age 28. 4 years later, to the day, he reported to OCS.
no, you are not too old. depending on your degree you may be eligible to go straight to OCS, although you are too old for SWO, Nuke and Aviation. however, you could try for Intell, IWO or IP as well as Supply or METOC.

why not try it out and see? I don't think you are too old at all to join the navy as long as it's what you want to do with your life. good luck

Please go see your local navy recruiter and ask for OCS. You are just fine they will be glad to see you. Oh yes you could also see your Coast Guard recruiter. Got to get in a plug for my branch!
