Most inmates are temporarily held at the arresting police agency's station and then either transported to the county correctional facility or the state jail. Try going to your local county sheriff's office website and look for something like a "booking blotter" or anything that has a list of offenders that have been entered into the system.
If that fails, just call your police/sheriff department non-emergency number (DO NOT call 911) and they should be able to help you find what you need.

Trying to find a pen pal? Maybe your next old lady? Or if you are simply trying to get a good look at those who have done major crimes, for future reference when they are released, just go to your states department of justice website, there you are allowed access to them. After all its your right to know, I say once the cuffs go on, your privacy goes out.
