Being a tall girl, you don't need to lose as much as most people would at 240. You could weigh 180 and still be considered healthy.

You say you want to lose weight to be healthy, so you won't want to go on any extreme diets which tend to be unhealthy and bad for you. It's best not to lose more than 2 lbs a week. If you're losing more than that, you're probably losing muscle instead of fat. No point in that! Also, when you lose the weight slowly, you're more likely to keep it off.

Severe dieting can confuse your metabolism. A lot of people say that after a diet, they gain back all the weight PLUS a few more pounds. The reason is they've messed up their metabolism. Until just the last couple hundred years, people didn't have a steady supply of food. When a person wasn't getting enough food their body would be triggered that there was a famine and slow down the metabolism... so each calorie was burned more slowly. This helped our ancestors get through famines and hard winters when there wasn't a way to store much food. A great survival tool and maybe the reason we're here today, but not something you want to bring on.

You need to increase your exercise, too. Just dieting alone won't do it. You want to build muscle, as well as let your body know that it isn't a famine and your metabolism should slow down. In a famine, weak hungry people just sit around, right? When things are good, people are out working and moving around. We're in the 21st century, but we still have the bodies our hunter-gatherer ancestors developed.

There's also the question of why we're over weight. Is it because we don't know which foods are good for us? I think a lot of people just don't realize how many more calories are in something fried in oil, rather than baked. Is it because we eat when we're lonely? Do we eat when we're bored? It's improtant to know HOW you put the weight on so that you can change the behavior which got you to the weight you're at now. Oprah's trainer, Bob Greene, has a book called "Get With The Program" that helps people examine how they put on the weight so that they can lose it and keep it off. He's very reasonable and has good sense. Get his book. The library and second hand bookstores will have it if money is short.

You also need support. If you can afford it, join Weight Watchers. They do a good job of teaching you about what's healthy and give you a lot of support. Their diet is good tasting and sensible. If you can't afford WW, look for a TOPS group in your area. TOPS stands for Take Off Pounds Sensibly. It doesn't cost much to join. There are weekely meetings and you get a lot of support there. It's more grassroots than WW.

Never change your body for someone else. Only do it for yourself. You're not going to be any more lovable or deserving of love just because you wear a smaller dress size.
Good luck!

same as any time you want to lose weight -
drink a large galss of water before your meals (helps you feel fuller with less food) keep your portion sizes smaller, cut out snacks and crap food, and get 30 minutes of good exercise at least 3 days a week.

and be realistic about what you are eating - too many say they do all these things, but then don't bother to 'remember' that candy bar here, that huge soda there, that big slice of cake - all those 'little' things that people don't want to admit they eat are usually the reason they aren't losing weight!

Maria, People who lose weight real fast with diet pills, etc. and not a life-style change, gain it all back and usually more! I'd suggest you stop eating anything with refined sugar and grease! eat fresh fruit, low fat yogurt, raw vegetables with low-fat salad dressing (if needed) and whole wheat bread. No butter, but a few nuts a day is O.K... Use a small plate and only eat what you put on it the first time then go for a walk. No more fast foods!

Eat right and excersize. For breakfast, maybe have fruit yogurt, and bread with fruit jam, not butter. Eat a salad with some croutons for lunch, a healthy snack like a fruit cup between, and for dinner, a serving of meat, 2 servings of veggies [steamed,] and for desert, some sorbert or something sweet, but still healthy. As for excersize, you could run each morning, each new weed, make you run a little longer. Cardio is the best way to lose weight. But you'll have to lift in order to tone yourself afterwards.

I applaud you on wanting to become leaner and healthier. But, try this for when the weather is in the teens. Exercise is a natural process that our bodies use to eliminate excess fat. People gain excess weight by either overeating or lack of sufficient exercise. So, on those days, stop and grab your coat and your keys and leave the house. Hurry to do this, but once outside take a leisurely stroll around your block. Then go back home and DON'T SIT DOWN, but do some house cleaning. Continue doing this 1 block jaunt for 1 week. Next week walk 2 blocks at the same leisure pace and go back home and clean some more. By now you should be more intuned to yourself and feeling like you can take on the world. Well, don't. We don't want you to get discouraged and stop walking. Your body will be fine tuning itself as you walk so you may not see immediate results. For your third week take in a block further and go home and do some more cleaning. Do the same for the fourth week as well. Now, here you are at the second month. You should be feeling more energetic. Are you? OK, then let's begin. This time when you go for your walk you will increase it by 2 blocks each week. If you feel pain or are short-winded then stop and go back to your last comfort zone of walking. This is only your body's way of saying that it is not ready for that step so fast. It is not telling you that you can't or never will do it, but just not then. Now go out and buy yourself some good raingear for the days when it is raining cats and dogs. Boots included and cover your nose and mouth as well. Don't let the inclement in the weather get in the way of you having good health. Now that you are walking further you need to go home and start organizing the cabinets and drawers. You are probably one of those people who still watch too much television. If you can't get up the nerve to throw it (idiot box) out, then watch it standing up as you go around and clean house. Oh, and another thing, while you are losing weight your clothes will start to bag and sag. Get rid of them! After all of your hard work you want to flaunt your success. Go out and buy new underwear and outerwear clothing. Don't forget that your feet will have lost weight too, so buy new shoes. Don't overwhelm yourself, though. Buy a piece at a time as you loose weight and get rid of your fat clothes. DO NOT STOP once you are at your ideal weight. Now you have to maintain it, for a lifetime. And always be aware of your surroundings. I can see you now. YOU'RE LOOKING GOOD!

exercise and diet is the best way to lose it and keep it off.........a girl I work with lost weight fairly easy by following the 6 small meals (more like snacks) a day, after 2 weeks of doing this she was able to take her largest size jeans (that where tight) off without unbuttoning and she wasn't doing any exercise yet, she doesn't eat alot of junk but still allows herself a couple small treats a week so that she can stick to it easier.

I've lost 5 kilos in my first week. It's my 10th day and I have included salad with some protein (eg. egg/ lean chicken) as you suggested. After 4 years of trying, the fat is finally coming off. It truly feels like magic!

Get started today!
