Should I buy a 2007 Beetle or Jetta? Why is a Jetta the same base price as a Beetle? What is the difference between the New Beetle and the 2.5 Beetle?

BACKGROUND: A little background information. Also, I take good care of my stuff. Whatever I buy I plan to have it for at least 5 years, probably much longer.

My current vehicle (a 1985 Toyota 4x4 P/U) is in need of serious repair. I have owned it for 20 years! The engine is still quiet as a mouse. Unfortunately it needs to be restored. So I'm considering a Jeep Wrangler or a Volkswagen Beetle.

LOL, I know they have nothing in common. I really like the 2007 Wrangler but I think it is going to be out because the gas mileage is horrible (16/19) and my commute is about 18 miles one way.

Now my girlfriend also suggested I might want to look at the Jetta. I like them both. But the Jetta seems like a lot of car for the money...so I'm skeptical.

FIRST OFF, DON'T PAY ATTENTION TO THE HALF WITS WHO SAY IT'S A GIRLS CAR, IF YOU LIKE IT BUY IT. I'D TEST DRIVE BOTH, EQUIPPED THE WAY YOU PLAN TO BUY.
ONE THING TO KEEP IN MIND IS THAT WHEN THE NEW BEETLE WAS RELEASED IN '98 IT'S PLATFORM WAS BASE ON THE SOON TO BE RELEASED GOLF/JETTA. EVEN THOUGH THE BEETLE GOT A "FACE LIFT" IT'S STILL BUILT ON THE SAME PLATFORM.
FOR '07 THE RABBIT/JETTA ARE COMPLETELY NEW. SO,IT'S CONCEIVABLY MORE UP TO DATE.
ODDLY ENOUGH VW IS REDESIGNING THE RABBIT/JETTA FOR '09 BECAUSE THE CURRENT PLATFORM IS TOO EXPENSIVE TO BUILD TO BE COST EFFECTIVE, SEE BELOW.

I agree with what the other YA people have said: you need to drive both and see which you prefer. Some suggestions: the Beetle is only 2 doors and has a very low roof in the back, so if you're going to have adult passengers on a somewhat regular basis, it might not be a good choice. The Jetta also offers much more cargo room. I drive a Passat, which is basically a larger Jetta and I love it. It even gets good mileage (about 30 highway) considering that it's a pretty big car. Even though I love my VW, I find that VW reliability is not what it could be (and is certainly nothing like Toyota). Purchase an extended warranty if you can afford it, but you'll love your new VW either way!

The 2.5 refers to the engine...that's the base model, I believe.

if you commute a long distance forget about the Jeep, I love the new Jeep and almost got it, I'm glad I stuck with my beetle because of the gas prices.

When it comes to the Beetle and Jetta, its all preference, test drive them both they will have very different overall feels to them. For instance the Jettas front windshield is a lot closer to the driver than the beetle's. Some like that some don't, they jetta has a bigger trunk then the beetle. So really its all about preference.

I would go for either the Beetle or the Jetta. Volkswagens are great cars! Very reliable and affordable! If I had to choose between the two, I'd definitely pick the Beetle. I have a 2007 New Beetle Convertible and its absolutely amazing! I couldn't be happier with my choice!!
Test drive the cars you are thinking of, get the feel of them and decide which car suites you best!
Good Luck!!

Having owned both a 97 Jetta and 98 Beetle, I found the Beetle (even newer ones) to be more plasticy. Things fall off more or break more often. I found the Jetta to be more sound.

Both engines and suspensions are equal. If you can wait a year or want to buy one off lease, go with a low milage 05-06 TDI of either model. The beetle I had got 48 mpg!

Tough call! VWs are really great cars, and totally worth every penny. I'm driving a 2007 VW Beetle right now with package #1 installed, and love every minute of driving it.

I've loved Beetles since I was a little kid (now almost 30!), and I was thrilled to finally be able to own one!

Good luck to you!

That's a tough one. I'm sort of in the same predicament. I would have to go with the Jetta. They get great gas mileage and they have great safety ratings. I own a Jeep and know how horrible the gas mileage is and want to get rid of it. Don't get the Beetle, that's a girl's car.

The Jetta has more room, better handling & seems to have more get up & go. Besides, the NewBeetle is kind of a girly car.
Really like the Rabbit too.....
