When they say people who suffer from Bi-polar, have manic highs and lows... how high...do you have to be? I know it's got to do with mood swings but do you have to be someone who is literately acting like they are on speed one minute and then high the lows drasticallyor can it be that you are normal/kinda happy and then drop low...is the hight of the highs significant in diagnoses? whats the other symptoms?

People with Bipolar Disorder have extreme mood swings.
And those swings can happen in just a matter of minutes.
Someone can be giggling and giddy (like they're on speed)
one minute, then the next minute, they're crying uncontrolably
and having thoughts of suicide. They also have times when
neither of the extremes are present and they seem "normal".
It's very maddening to that person because in some of their
down moods, they can be mean, hateful, and destructive.
Medications can help many Bipolar sufferers, while others are
left to fend for themselves. It's very sad.

I agree the manic episodes have to be dramtic from the lows, but as I get older and after 16 yrs of being bipolar, I am changing. My highs aren't as high and my lows are nearly normal. They use to be 10.0 on the richter scale now the measure about a 2. I am proof it can vary with age dn I have been seen by many phychs because of my changes. They are inerested in why it is weaning. As I get older I just enjoy myself as a person and my life and the bipolar is secondary.

There is more than one kind of bipolar disorder. Hypomania is the kind of mania that I would have - it's not happy, at all. It just means that your thoughts are running faster than usual.
In comparison, my depression stages would be incredibly low - my hypomanic states would just be a little bit down. When that is your happy, there is a problem. Still working on a solution. I don't remember what it's like to feel happy.
But - I'm not going to cry about it, try to make people feel sorry for me. I hate that when I see other people milking their sorrow to get people's attention. I hate it so bad, it's a bitter irony that I have to face the same thing, and want badly for people to notice me and help me, but hate it at the same time. Sometimes I just want to disappear away from everything.

They can as with one poor lady I met, think they are the Queen of England and expect everyone to bow. They can feel that are Superman and can leap off tall walls. ( that patient broke his legs!) They have no foresight and often take all there money out of the bank and spend it. Or they may have quite mild mood elevation and just appear happy. There are all extremes.

there is no middle ground you fluctuate between being on the ceiling hyper cant stop to hitting rock bottom
you dont get the "normal" level of being settled
medication helps gives you something to work on but its hard to keep on an even keel
