The best way is to freeze your cake layers before frosting them (I do wedding cakes and this also takes a lot of the stress out of doing the cake at the last minute.) Frost it while it's frozen and the crumbs won't be a problem.
The other most common solution is to use either a simple syrup (equal amounts of sugar and water, cooked into a light syrup) or melted and strained apricot jam, and 'painting' the cake with this first, before frostong it. The syrup/jam will glaze the cake and keep it from getting crumby.

RE:
I need to know how to put frosting on a cake without getting cake crumbs into the frosting.?
I was putting frosting on a Red Velvet Cake the other day and no matter what I tried I ended up with cake crumbs in the frosting. It ended up looking like the frosting had red "sprinkels" in it.

Brush the crumbs off of the cake. Take a small amount of teh icing anfd coat the cake with it. This is called a crumb coat because it will seal the crumbs to the cake. Let the cake sit in the open air for 10-15 minutes for the coat to set. Then using big globs of icing and taking your time, you can frost the cake.

Take a small amount of the frosting and spread it over your cake in a thin layer. It's OK if this has crumbs in it. Let that set for a bit, then gently spread the rest of your frosting over the cake.

Spoon warmed, softened frosting on to the cake and use a spatula to spread it around, check the spatula for crumbs every so often before adding more frosting.

Put a large glob of icing on a COOLED cake and spread it gently around with a damp knife. Be sure not to let the spatula touch the cake.
I took a class and the instructor iced a cake with out getting crumbs into the icing. It takes practice!

after you take your cake out of the pans and they have completely cooled brush them off. you can use your hand or use a very soft brisseled paint brush. and then when applying the frosting do it in short easy strokes till cake is completely frosted and even the frosting out.

Maybe you should warm up the frosting and decoratively drizzle over the cake. That way it'll be iced and people will be impressed with your culinary know how.

I used to decorate cakes as a hobby for friends etc.Took some cake decorating classes.
The best way is to freeze your baked cake first and decorate it frozen.
Doesn't take long to unthaw at all.Just bake ahead of time and VOILA a perfectly iced cake.

Sweetie,as tempting as i know it is,and how LONG the wait seems.Simply wait until it is completely cooled. When it is cooled, the frosting will not have "crumbs".However, red sprinkles are festive, and you really cannot mess up a red velvet cake.Just wait until it cools, place it on a rack to cool.Allow it to cool completely, and then frost it.good luck hun,and have a good evening.
