I have a 1 year old daughter and a two year old son. I love the way Pit Bulls look, but I'm very scared to get one because of my kids. I have a boxer and a American Bulldog/Bull Massiff. They bark at other dogs, but not at people. I do not live in a safe town, and I need a dog that is going to be protective but not have to worry about the dog bitting my kids or our friends.

Dobermans are the most loving-protective of their families of any breed--They are house dogs-not yard dogs-You should get a puppy so it can be raised with your children--I raise red & fawn dobies--they are awesome animals!! They also sense when people are "good" or "bad"--always trust them to know the difference!! It's what they were bred for!

If money isn't a big issue, then a Bernese Moutain Dog would be a great dog. I have Berner and it cost over $2,000, but I heard someone say that they have found them for about $600 so it just depends where you live. Berners are great family dogs. They are loyal, friendly, and are very protective. They don't bite unless provoked. They are also very beautiful dogs. They are just great all- around.

Joshua C is full of it! I have had German Shepard's my whole life and have never had a problem with any of them, they are very protective of their family. Have you ever heard of the police using pit bulls in their work?

German shepherds are wonderful with little kids and people but they are very protective. My aunt has one and she dresses it up with her kids and play with it but if someone comes to the house and there German shepherd doesn't like them it will stand in front of them and growl and bark.

You don't want to get any dog that might bite anybody! Yes dogs are our protectors, but don't get one just to scare people off! Cause then your not going to have a dog because it will bite someone and have to be put to sleep.

P.S. I AM NOT generalizing breeds, as I love Rottis/Pits, ect.
I just feel this is the reason they have bad names!

I had a German Shepard , he was great with my daughter and he was very smart. I would tell him to go get my daughter if she started to run off and he would circle around her until she came back.

one thing!!! do NOT get a pitbull.. they can very easily turn on you and your kids they might be friendly and yes they are protective to.. but its something in there genes that makes it not a very good pet for little ones in your house maybe in a junk yard but not as household pets w/ young kids my suggestion would be a lab or a german shepard.. they are quite protective and lovable with kids..
