She ran out of toilet bowl cleaner and told me she used the rest of my mouth wash to clean the toilet. So I jokingly asked her "when she runs out of mouth wash does she gargle with toilet bowl cleaner" She got angry and then she quit.

Ha ha ha, pretty funny. Guess she didn't have much of sense of humor.

The point is - "Don't ever run out of toilet bowl cleaner." It evidently makes the cleaning lady unhappy. Make it a point to keep the cleaning lady happy. Nothing worse than a dirty house. Have fun cleaning house!

Usually sarcastic remarks are made with change of the tone of your voice. Perhaps you made the comment without giving any indication that it was a joke or sarcasm. Or maybe she misinterpret it as "you wash your mouth with toilet bowl cleaner when you run out of mouth wash".

That's odd, I have no idea. But do you really want a cleaner who cleans your toilet with mouth wash anyway?

She was offended. That's okay. She can find work with someone who doesn't say such things.

Maybe you can buy some toilet cleaner, and hire a new lady.

she's cleaning where you 1 and 2 and you're degrading her with a comment like that, you might think its funny, but trust me it wasn't. just because she's working in your home doesn't give you the right to be lax of social/workplace rules of etiquette. would this kind of rudeness be excepted o.k. where you work? i'm guessing not so its not proper either in the home workplace.

you should write her a letter telling her you're sorry for making such a rude comment and that it was wrong and thoughtless.

Be thankful that she did quit. Good riddance! I am quite sure, that your toilet was not so filthy, that she could not have waited until the next time she came to clean it, and brought more appropriate disinfectant for use. Furthermore, I would not give her a good recommendation!

Sounds like you are a lazy jerk. You don't say things like that to people, especially when they are cleaning up your nasty bathroom! Take this as a learning experience. If you are to lazy to clean your own house, better be nice to the one who does.
Either get off you butt and clean your own mess, or get used to living in the filth you make!

Pretty silly reason to quit a job. I hope she doesn't really need it. I would have found it funny, but I also wouldn't have told you I used your mouthwash. I'd have used another cleaning product.

She quit because she probably felt affended the way you came at her. Like if she was a nobody. She's has feelings to.

You embarrassed her, made her feel dumb. If you really like her as your cleaning lady, call her and apologize. Some people can take sarcasm, some can't. I guess that is why we learn the hard way.
