From years of experience and from all the write ups on reliability etc. choose a Japanese model. They are the most reliable cars out there. Trust me. Enjoy! Go for a smallish engine no more than 1500cc if you want value in petrol. 1100cc if you want really good value. Then when you get your car, don't thrash it, treat it well and it'll save you a fortune!

I'd search for a recent (2000) model Honda, Toyota or similar used vehicle. For under ten thousand, you're not going to get a really great car, but there are plenty of good ones available at that price. If you know how to drive a manual transmission, your chances are even better, since most of the stick shift autos are better on gas than automatics of the same year and make.

You should get a small AMERICAN car, like a Ford, Chrysler or GM product. For under 10,000 you can get a one or two year old car still under warranty. If you buy a simple car, the repairs and maintenance won't kill you. ALSO, a small, simplecar won't be hard on Insurance costs. Get the newest car you car afford, and the simple cars are less expensive to repair, and they are good on gas. Also check consumer reports on the Internet for what to stay away from.
