You place an empty glass on one side of a balance scale and a one pound weight on the other side. Then you fill the glass with water until the two sides are perfectly balanced. Now you put your finger down into the water without touching the glass. It makes the water level in the glass rise, but it doesnt overflow. What happens to the scale, and why?

the answer is C. It does not move at all.

The glass would have to be a larger one to have water in it but still have enough room for your finger to go in without displacing any of the water, ergo there is lots of room left in the glass for the water to go. The water still weighs the same, you haven't put any more pressure on the scale, it's just that it needs to make room for your finger.

I'll say A. glass side goes up.
You may not be adding weight to the water, only displacing it. But skin is porous, and will probably soak up some of the water.

it holds still cuz the finger is not touching the glass and so its weight can't contribute to that of the glass.

The weight of your finger is balanced out the an upward floating force, thus in total, there is no added/reduced force on the glass side, thus no changes to the scale balance.
