Do they just explode when they hit the ground?
How do they detonate?

There are many different types of ordinance, with some when the bombs hit the ground they blow up, some are remotely detonated...etc.

Yes a old fashion dumb bomb (like they dropped in WW II) would have detonated upon impact (hopefully) From time to time in England and Europe they still find un-exploded bombs around. Modern smart bombs can be detonated in a number of ways with a number of different effects.
