Ecosystems are characterized in terms of biotic and abiotic components, material flows, and energy flows.

Some materials (like nitrogen, for example) can be critical or limiting factors in ecosystem function, so ecologists started analysis of nitrogen cycling, nutrient cycling, and material cycling in ecosystems. In a forest, for instance, they discovered that some nitrogen in tree leaves that fall to the ground gets recycled back to the trees as the leaves decay. A very famous study on the Hubbard Brook Watershed in New England showed that when trees were cut down, the nitrogen left the forest ecosystem in the stream instead of remaining within the watershed and being recycled in new plant growth.
