This depends on your native language. For me, learning English was the gateway to a whole new world. I could read English books, speak to English speakers, visit sites in English. I know I will be able to get a better job. I have friends from the U.S., U.K., Canada and Australia. I can go on holidays without the fear of not being able to communicate. Maybe, one day I can go to a university abroad. Now I want to learn German because Germany is a near country and German will help me when I will be in need of a job, or will wish to study in Berlin.

Because most people who know more than one language get better pay. Suppose you know spanish then you can communicate with all the spanish speaking people easier. What if you want to go to France? Are you going to learn a little French like how to ask for directions, food, restroom, hotel, etc. or are you going to carry one of those stupid books that aren't that acurate? Learning a new language also help work your brain then it is easier for you to remember other things.

I think it is important to learn a foreign language to become more culturally aware. It also helps you to be more marketable when looking for a job. It also seems to help me understand my language a little better, by examining it a little more closely and asking why we say and do certain things.

America has become a melting pot for all nationalities. Just think of all the new friends you could make if you could speak their language! Any one that speaks more than one language, has the advantage of getting a better & higher paying job. Also while traveling, it is so much more satisfying & enjoyable to be able to speak to the locals in their native language!
