Whatever you do don't get him the personalized football jersey unless he has ever expressed interest in one. Stick with stuff for his favorite team and if you do get a jersey find out who his favorite player is.
Tickets to a game are probably the best gift you could do but those are usually expensive and sometimes hard to get.
