Drug abuse needs to be distinguished from drug use.

Drug abuse is when one mis-uses a drug in a harmful way -- their use of the drug is non-voluntary (they feel they "need" it and can't stop using it), or in some way "takes over" their life.

It messes up your body, your head, your relationships to others.

If the drug is the most important thing in your life, it often leads to criminal behavior (sleeping with strangers for drugs or money for drugs and theft are the most common).

If you become a slave to a drug, you neglect all the other things in your life -- getting and using the drug comes before work, taking care of your kids, and everything else.

This society tends to confuse all drug use with abuse, but this is just wrong.

Someone who once in a while gets high is not abusing drugs, but using them recreationally.

This CAN lead to their abusing it, but doesn't always.

It's when it's messing up your health or life that it's a problem.

Drug abuse, is the use of any drug in a way that is different from intended by the doctor.

Effects can be as little as nothing, to as much as death and everything in between.
Addiction, can happen, long term use may destroy body organs, , can upset metabolism, or increase or decrease efficacy of other medications.

Drugs are controlled because they are effective in what they do, but are also dangerous when not used properly.

Drug abuse is using drugs prescription, or non prescription, in order to get high. Also taking drugs that alter the state of mind, and only taking them for that reason, is an abuse to yourself, and maybe others. Getting hooked, even if you didnot intend for that to happen is tough when your trying now to get off the drugs. Withdrawal is a b****!

Drug abuse is the use of drugs that are illicit/not prescribed to you/not taken by a proffesional's advice. Drug abuse is generally in prescription drugs, but not limited to OTC or illegal drugs.

People who abuse drugs like opium/heroin/oxycodone tend to withdrawl from the world, and loose interest in things they once enjoyed. The users also sometimes develop different facial features, like black rings forming under their eyes, and the black rings rarely go away.

Drug addiction is a complex disease and only a strong will or good intentions can help to quite it. Drug abuse and addiction change their behavior. In fact, drugs change the brain in ways that boost uncontrollable drug abuse. Quitting drugs is so difficult, even for those who are ready to do so.
