It could go out now. Birds are nesting from now onwards.

I think you should. It would be nice to the birds so they don't have to hunt around for it. If it is your yard the birds might even nest in trees in your yard! Now wouldn't that be nice. But make sure all the materials are non-toxic, and completely environmental safe. Some birds can even choke, and die on the wrong materials! Just make sure they are biodegradable, and it won't hurt the environment.

Hi,

It would depend on the types of birds you are trying to get to nest near you. I currently have several nuthatches at my feeders in New Hampshire. I have set up a few bird houses for them and materials to aid them in their search for nesting items.

Here are some other materials that I have provided:

Dried grass (hay)
Yarn
Spanish moss (available in most garden centers)
Dog hair (that's right, dog hair)
Human hair
Short strips of cotton fabric
String
Pine needles
Feathers
Short thin twigs

I loaded a few suet feeders and hung them near the nest boxes.

Good Luck,
John

You don't need to put out anything, as they are very adept at finding what they want, the same goes for feeding, it only encourages the "welfare State" for birds.
