1) Ask for credit reports from the bureaus.

2) Look out for any errors in it.

3) Prepare a Credit Dispute Log recording the details of problems and errors.

4) Contact telephonically the original debtors with whom you are having a dispute. Record the details of the call, especially the name of the person with whom you spoke and a brief overview of the agreements.

5) Send the certified letter to the original debtor.

6) Send letters to collectors, disputing the bill. Also, send the proof of payment to the original lender.

7) Fill out the dispute form available at the credit bureau.

8) Write a letter for each disagreed item separately and send it to the credit bureau by certified mail. Attach the proof to support your claim.

9) The bureau will provide you a reference number. Call up the bureau with this reference number and find out the progress of the matter.

10) Maintain a Credit File containing detailed records of your case.

Fixing your credit isn't something that happens overnight.

When I was in college, I wrecked mine. Late payments on all my bills. Delinquincy. Maxed credit cards with missed payments. My credit score was smaller than Paris Hilton's waist line.

Today it is 760-820 depending on which credit agency you ask.

Start by paying all of your bills on time. For me, direct withdraw on most of my bills was a huge help. It wasn't always that I didn't have the money, I just forgot to pay. Although... sometimes I just didn't have the money.

So I started spending less. Living within my means. Got a tiny little apartment, and eating out less. Finally paid off all the credit cards. Paid them off first, since they had all the stupid fees and ridiculous interest rates. (They should be illegal!!!)

But it took years to get my score up. Finally saved some money and bought myself a little house. Don't let the morgage people talk you into something you can't afford or all that hard work getting your credit score up will disappear. For years my wife and I would nudge each other when we went to spend money with this phrase, and it worked. "Would you rather have ______ or a house?"

Good luck to you. I love our little home. It is small, but cute, and was worth all the times we didn't eat out.
