First you have to find out what the cause of your depression is. Depression can be caused by physical exhaustion, repressed anger, trying to cope with abuse, loss of a loved one, or loss of a job, hormonal imbalance, poor diet, loneliness, long-term illness, even lack of sunshine.
Any situation that discourages you can cause a season of depression. So can the let-down after having succeeded in a major activity or project.
Once you find out what the cause of your depression is, you can decide what to do about it. Do you need to talk to an understanding friend or counselor? Do you need to allow yourself a time of grieving? Not every depression can be cured with medication.
One good thing I found to help me is regular exercise. My doctor wanted to put me on Prozac when I had a season of depression. As I read the booklet that accompanied Prozac, I saw that Prozac contains the same ingredient that regular exercise produces in the brain. So, I started a program of daily half-hour walks and never took the Prozac and started to feel better.
Also writing out my feelings as a prayer to Jesus helps me cope with the frustrating and depressing issues that life confronts me with.
Cindy, I saw in another one of your questions that your mother died. No wonder you are feeling depressed. I am sorry for your loss.
Ps 34:18 The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.
You may not FEEL His nearness right now, but He is still there, weeping with you.
I am praying for you.

Cindy,
are you taking anything yet? Have you seen a doctor.
That is the first step in getting some help.
I suffered a melt down last year. My dad nearly died.
I have 3 kids (busy) and went back to work for the first time in 11 years. Suddenly I felt like I was drowning and the arm trying to help me was not in reach.
I'd lay awake at night and worry.. and that caught up with me. I am not sure if I was depressed but a good friend made sure I saw a doctor.
He put me on Zoloft. I found in a few weeks I didn't have the anxiety. It made me sleepy though but I stuck it out a year. I tried very hard to do things that made me happy.
Just one thing a day for "me". Don't laugh but I found Bikram Yoga helped me a lot -
and also being outside in the sun.
Hopefully you are getting help or maybe you just need to talk to someone. Good Luck.

The best thing you can do for yourself is to seek treatment... I've suffered with chronic, moderate depression for most of my life (dysthimia).
I finally sought treatment in college... up to then, I was really screwing up by finding ways to "feel better", alcohol mainly. Not good!
First, I went through psychotherapy. It sounds freaky but it's just talking to someone and coming up with strategies for coping and solving problems. Because I had depression since childhood, it developed into a chemical imbalance.
After a bout with post-partum depression with both pregnancies, I am on a regular doseage of Zoloft and feeling much better. (I feel as if things don't set me off, more calm.)
There are lots of resouces out there, especially if you cannot afford treatment. Fortunately my college had a program for students that was free of charge.
I've provided the link below... Please take the first step; you'll be glad that you did. You deserve it!!

I can't promise miracles... I'm now 40 and some days are better than others but mostly good now. If your depression is due to a specific situation, examine what you can do to make this better for you. If it is a situation of neglect or abuse, I would get help immediately. Keep in touch and take care!!
Hugs,
Mon :-)

Have you sought help from your doctor? There are medications you can take that will help you greatly...even if you only need them temporarily. Don't be afraid to ask. Also, counseling is a good idea. I have been on anti-depressants for about 15yrs now...I know they can help! Please ask your doctor for help. It will get better.
