Critical Reading skills would dictate that the reader ask, "In what context was the quote used?"

A more complete version of Walker's quote, “Guided by my heritage of a love of beauty and a respect for strength--in search of my mother's garden, I found my own.”

In searching for who her mother was as a person, Walker finds who she is as a person. I feel many people who search for answers about heir parents, often find answers about themselves as well. We truly are conceived from our mothers and fathers.

I was able to locate several essays and even sermons with Walker's quote as the guiding theme.

Good Luck....

I think the quote means that while she was trying to found out more about her mothers (in an ancestral sense) that she found out a lot more about herself.

While trying to understand who my mother is (was) I actually discovered who I am.

It has to do with the link between the mother and daughter, and how understanding one can help you understand the other.

I think it means that sometimes when we think we are after something else, we find ourselves. And also that our relationships with our mothers are more intertwined that we realize.

Often when we look at ourselves we find that we are very similar to our parents.
In discovering ourselves we find who our parents are because we are indeed part of them. Taking the good, the bad and the indifferent from our parents we find ourselves.
