II Machabees, xii, 40-46. When Judas and his men came to take away for burial the bodies of their brethren who had fallen in the battle against Gorgias, "they found under the coats of the slain some of the donaries of the idols of Jamnia, which the law forbiddeth to the Jews: so that all plainly saw, that for this cause they were slain. Then they all blessed the just judgment of the Lord, who had discovered the things that were hidden. And so betaking themselves to prayers, they besought him, that the sin which had ben committed might be forgotten...And making a gathering, he [Judas] sent twelve [al. two] drachms of silver to Jerusalem for sacrifice to be offered for the sins of the dead, thinking well and religiously concerning the resurrection (for if he had not hoped that they that were slain should rise again, it would have seemed superfluous and vain to pray for the dead), and because he considered that they who had fallen asleep in godliness, had great grace laid up for them. It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins."

As a Catholic myself, and a Catholic school teacher, we believe that everyone who dies and goes to Heaven is a saint, not an angel, like many people think. Angels were created by God specifically to be angels...messengers of God. So no human being can become an angel.
It's faith, simple as that. You have to believe what you can't see or hear. It's all part of that "free will" God gave us. God could easily prove Himself to all of us, and He doesn't, because of faith. I believe the saints can hear us, and so can our loved ones who have passed.
Christians and other people also need to realize that Catholics DO NOT worship or even pray to the saints. We simply ask them for help and prayers for certain intentions. It's always good to have prayers being said for you, and it doesn't hurt one bit to ask for a little help from above!

We don't know if they can hear us, just as much as we don't know if we're going to heaven or hell. It is called faith my friend. I have faith that if I envoke the prayers of a particular saint that they will pray for me to our dear and loving God for my favor. Same concept of asking someone else(mother, brother, sister) to pray for you. With that said, I also have faith that if I pray directly to God himself that he will hear my prayer and respond accordingly, which will lead me to comply with His Will for my prayer request. The more prayers to God the better!!
I don't believe that all traditions and beliefs instituted by Christ are biblical. There were too many to be contained in one book, so therefore were passed down through tradition of the Church. Christ gave St. Peter the authority over the Church and to carry on traditions which were not written in scripture, as well as those that are in scripture. So you may not find the tradition of envoking intercessory prayers from the saints in the bible.
Matthew 16:18-19 "And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven."

The dead hear nothing, now Christ who is risen might hear your prayers if you keep the TEN COMMANDMENTS.
Psalm 115v17 The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence.
18 But we will bless the LORD from this time forth and for evermore. Praise the LORD.

That's a Catholic thing I dont belive in "Saints"...
Saints would imply that Jesus loved them more then others...wouldn't it?
