And should I make them buy their own dress?

First of all, congratulations!

Secondly, if those six bridesmaids are near and dear to your heart, then its just the right amount! It's your wedding, and you should share it with the special people that you love, whether thats two, six, or ten.

Traditionally, bridesmaids buy their own dresses, as well as any additional garb needed for the wedding day. I don't know if you've asked your bridesmaids to be bridesmaids yet, but, if you haven't, make sure that your bridesmaids are aware of this responsibility so they can start saving pennies!

If you've already asked them, then now would be the time to let them know of that responsibility. A good idea is to send out a wedding newsletter to everyone involved with the wedding detailing everyone's responsibilities, that way no one feels specifically target and everyone knows what's expected of them.

After that, you might get some feedback from bridesmaids who may not have the funding to buy their wedding attire. At this point, you should discuss it with each bridesmaid in private.

If one indicates to you that cost could be a problem, suggest finding a low-cost or discount, yet beautiful, dress for her. If that's still too much money for her, suggest splitting the cost. And if your bridesmaid still cannot afford the attire (which is very unlikely), then, at this point, it would be prudent to offer to pay for the dress after these negotiations. You certainly don't want to alienate a friend over the cost of a bridesmaids dress.

However, whenever you speak to each bridesmaid, you should be plainly clear that her special needs are just that- special. Let her know that she shouldn't run to bridesmaid 2 or 4 and tell her how you're helping her with her bridesmaid dress. Let her know that her circumstances are special, yet you still want her to be in the wedding. And just like she may not be able to afford a single bridesmaids dress, you cannot afford to buy six, either, which the other bridesmaids might then expect you to do!

Overall, however, if you choose moderately priced bridesmaid dresses and give your bridesmaids a few months notice, they should be able to afford the attire or at least a portion of it.

Good luck with your bridesmaids!

I have 7 and they all will buy there own dress. My maids dress cost 139 plus shoes 55, hair and accessories add other 50. So what I did have the guy throw in another 30 dollars since their tux cost only 99 with the shoe to kind of even the amount of money they spend out. The $30 I get from the guy are the girl flowers and guy flower or whatever it call.

Well I think Hollywood stars have had that many (can't think who it was).
Probably too many from a logistical point of view:
Cat fights - ever heard the phrase - to many cooks spoil the broth?
Too expensive - you will be expected to pitch in on some of the costs here.

You obviously feel these 6 are very important to you though so if that is the case so be it. Although if you could maybe get two to help in a nother way I am sure it would all work out.
But as I say if you have your heart set on 6 then go for it!

I've heard you should have one bridesmaid for each fifty guests. It makes sense. Six would be a lot if you were only inviting a few dozen guests, but it doesn't seem like a lot if you were inviting a thousand.
Bridesmaids pay for their own dresses, shoes, headwear. Often the gift for them from the bride is a piece of jewely to wear that day (earrings, necklace). Good luck

Congrats first and foremost! I have 7 bridesmaids and I don't think that is too many at all. It is PERFECTLY fine to have them paying for their own dress & alterations. It is a great honor to be asked by the bride to be standing next to her to wittness the unity of true love. If they see it that way then they are true Bridesmaids and friends. Do what you want to do. You could have 20, and it wouldn't matter because you'd be happy. Thats all that counts on this special day...your happiness and his happiness. Good Luck!!

I hope you mean bridesmaids. lol.
**edit**Sorry I just thought you meant brides. LOL

It's completely up to you. Are they all close good friends/family???

Don't have 6 random people just to have 6.

Mine are paying for their own dresses, but I didn't go crazy on dresses either. I didn't pick out expensive dresses. They're only wearing it for one day, and I find that a tad bit silly. We went with the Alfred Angelo line, I picked out the color, and then they chose the mix and match styles.
