Kinda sounds like it might be asthma.
It's not that you're in lousy shape, but when you do enough to breathe heavily, it takes forever to get your breath back -- you, like pant and gasp for air much longer than everyone else.
Is that it?
Make an doctor's appointment. And tell the doc about this. Is this a recent thing? Has it always been like this?
It's possible that allergies are part of what's going on -- they trigger, or in conjuction with excercise help trigger asthma attacks.
There are meds to take to control the condition, as well as an emergency -- to help you breath right away when you're in trouble -- med.
If you ignore it, it could get you into real trouble some day.

There could be a variety of things wrong. Are you overweight? Even if you're thin you could be out of shape. You may have a fast metabolism but that doesn't mean you can't develop clogged arteries or have high cholestorol. You may want to bring that your doctors attention. Also if you smoke that could be a problem. But I would try working on running more often to get your heart used to working so hard. Good Luck!
EDIT: Oh yea! Reading other people's posts, asthma could be a problem. Advair works extremely well. :D

wow people are stupid lol they dont understand the meaning of "I DON'T SMOKE AND I'M NOT OVERWEIGHT" lol dont worry about it, i used to be like that too. all you need to do is build your stamina/endurance. you can do that by jogging. start by jogging 3 minutes without stopping. when you're comfortable with that, move up to 5 minutes. then 8 then 10. it takes awhile cuz you need to train yourself not to get tired easily. after you can jog nonstop for a certain amount of time, you'll be able to run for more than a minute. that was the case for me so basically just increase ur stamina by working out and you'll be fine! good luck :)

you might have asthma, you should check with your doctor. or you could probly not be breathing right while you are runnin, i used to have this problem, i would hold my breath, most of the time when i'm running now i have to concentrate on breathing. try that. and if that's not it, go see your doc.
as for all the rude people, stop bein so stuck up and thinkin that someone that can't breath while runnin is because they are fat or they smoke, you don't have all the info about someone so you shouldn't be judging and making asumptions!!!!!!!!

Did you just start running as an exercise? Do you have asthma? Do you stop running abruptly as apposed to slowing down to a walking pace and then stopping? Any of these things can be the culprit so think about them and go from there.

You should talk with your doctor as a first step. When you have ruled out medical problems - then just walk, and then speed up the walking until you can do that successfully without getting out of breath. Then take on a very slow job etc. and just build up your time and excertion of exercise.

Maybe you have a pulmonar condition or you need a little exercise more often. Go see a doctor and find out what he tells you about the question.

Go to the doctor and ask for an exercise stress test, it will test how well your body regulates oxygen/blood flow while exercising.

you're over exerting. Take a little at a time. Start out walking and making your pace a little faster each routine.
