I would recommend trying to repair it with Bars Leak:

I have used chemicals all my life and have always got high mileage from my vehicles.I always use Bars Leak for my radiator and do not see ANY PROBLEM adding aadditive to fix your issue. Sometimes the rubber shrinks and the additive swells it back up. Wouldn't you be happy if you can get another 50k miles or so out of the van? I would spend the $5.00 and give it ago. You probably want to change your oil first then dump it in.

Karl,

I had a lovely little 84 Mercury Marquis with a degrading mainseal. The oil leak was excessive. I was a single parent working three jobs, needed a dependable means of transportaion.....

I tried three mechanics and the same opinion was given.

With the wear and tear on this part ," it may never stop the leak. We cam replace it, No quauntees.............anywhere..

To spend $800.00 for something at that time which no one could say would work, and knowing it would have to be done again, well, . I no longer have that car.

Your leak is not as bad as minwe, I leaked about a quart a trip, 250 miles. really.................... oil was spewing out the rear as I dorve down the highway, when it reached that point I had no choice but to take it off the road............I loved the car....

I would access the whole, see what your needs are right now, get anothe ropinion if needed and go from there.
From what I understand the mainseal is an integral part of the vehicle.

Hope it works out for you....

The leak will only get worse, and it is not easy to fix, being a minivan. That van does not have any real resale value. I would suggest selling it for a low price, maybe $500 and getting something else. do not add any of the chemicals to the oil to stop it from leaking. They do massive damage to your bearings as well. Just run it or sell it.

Best of Luck!

grab some brake fluid. just a cap full and put it in the oil. it makes the rubber gaskets swell. at least thats what im told and i have done this as preventive maintenance and has never hurt the engine. just use a cap full.
