Ok, maybe my question is not as dramatic as the title may suggest. I normally keep all my snacks and junk food in a drawer in my shelf. I was cleaning the shelf and just discovered a box of fried rice that I now realize had been there for nearly 6 months. Only now it isn't a box of fried rice, inside the box its covered in loads of smiley green stuff. First of all, what is this stuff? And second of all should I throw away the other food stuf (like chocolates, chips etc.) if they've lived with the box of slimey stuff for nearly six months?

May I add that none of my other snacks have stayed there for six months. Just that I keep bringing chips packets every week and they would have been in the same drawer as the moldy box.

First of all, congratulations on your new baby Science Project!
Obviously, the rice has got to go. Probably, things like chips, etc. are stale beyond belief, even if they've been sealed in their original package.
As for chocolates...the chocolate should still be fine, technically; not much can affect it. But if it was stored near the rice (or anything else with an odor), the chocolate has probably picked up the unpleasant odor. Probably best to cut your losses and buy a whole batch of fresh snacks.

its either covered in mold, or insect larvae. Either one could cross contaminate the other foods. I would chuck the lot, disinfect the drawer, let it dry thoroughly and start over. Mold can cause adult onset allergies and illness. Insect larvae can nest in the crevices and haunt you for years to come with eggs that hatch, breed, lay more eggs, and the cycle is endless. I once got pantry moth infestation, and to this day, find the occasional moth, despite repeated cleanings and sanitizings. You are quite the drama queen, arent you?? LOL! HELP!!!!

It's just mold and it should not affect the other foods. Except maybe with taste. Some foods soak up Oder's.

If the other food is in unbroken packaging it will be fine, anything that is open should be thrown as it will be contaminated
