The kitchen & living room are one big room so I have to be careful what I use. Oak laminate flooring, stainless steel appliances, white cupboards with granite looking counter top. Curtains in the living room are gold colour.

I would use a stone tile back splash with very Little spacing in between the joint. Then use silicone to match to seal the seam!

I like your style, Susie...

Of all the things I have ever used for a backsplash, the most decorative and pleasing one was to use stucco or brick panel sections which are normally used around a fireplace indoors. They are adhesive backed and easily wiped clean. I would not use a gloss finish type as they do not have a natural look about them. They are available in many stores, lumberyards and decorative cement block outlets.

Because the surface is uneven, I would not recommend these as a backsplash for a countertop range that has no backsplash attached. I would recommend installing the stone-like panels and then, install a large clear cutting board in front of the decor panel just where the range is. The cutting board can be mounted with mirror clamps. This way you can wipe clean any cooking spatter with no effort at all.

you can do a stainless steel backsplash (solid sheets or "tiles") to go with you appliances. also, i'm not sure what kind of style you're going for, but i've seen painted beadboard installed as a back splash. it's inexpensive and looks very charming.

We installed plate glass mirrors as a backsplash. It's beautiful, and makes the space look so much larger, and it's easy to clean.

Also....it goes great with the SS appliances...we have those, too.

Find dishes in desired color scheme at discount and thrift stores. Crush them in a baggie with a hammer on cement. Take the pieces and install as you would with ceramic tile. This is a little time consuming, but beautiful!

Take a look at some glass "tile".

RIALTO tiles are good.

Under-cabinet lighting renders a nice subtle effect.
