Good question! Many illnesses are caused by microorganims which include bacteria and viruses. In many cases these pathogens (organisms that cause disease) produce factors that help them colonize and infect a host animal - you, me, a cow or a dog. Superficially we look different from dogs. When you observe things more closely, you'll find that we differ in many other ways that are too small to be seen by the naked eye. The surfaces of our cell membranes, though similar in many respects, have many differences. Nearly all pathogens need to bind to cell membranes at some point so they can establish a "residence", or worse, get inside the cell to do some damage - bad for us, but good for the pathogen as the inside of a cell has a lot of food and nutrients.

So - the "hook" a pathogen uses to bind to a dog cell's membrane may not work on a human cell, and vice versa.

However, humans can get sick from dogs, and dogs from humans. You may have heard of rabies - a deadly infection that once killed many peple, until Louis Pasteur developed a vaccine against the infection. The virus which causes rabies slowly destroys the nervous system. Infected animals behave oddly, often loosing their fear of humans. For this reason, you should never pet or approach a wild animal that suddenly seems 'friendly.' Dogs infected with the viruses are often called "MAD" as they foam profusely at the mouth, like a madman. The destruction of their nervous system makes it difficult to swallow saliva, so it drools from the mouth. If bitten by a mad dog, a human can contract rabies. Theoretically an infected human could pass the virus to an unifected dog, though I have never heard of it happeneing. In most cases domesticated pets acquire the virus through contact with animals in the wild.

There are a few real keys to dog training, whether you are trying to train your dog to come when called, sit, stop barking or any other behavior. Understanding their importance is critical to achieving rapid results that are long lasting and help develop the bond between you and your dog. Read more here https://bitly.im/xQ5Wh

The first is simple; you must win your dogs mind. If you don’t achieve this first then you will be struggling the all the way. When I talk about winning your dogs mind what I really mean is that your dog looks to you for all the decisions. Before you do anything else watch one of the amazing video sites that show you the 5 Golden rules to establishing yourself as the pack leader. If you aren’t putting these in place then you are setting yourself up to fail. Just at the crucial point where you really want your dog to listen they will go and do their own thing. For sure your dog may play ball occasionally or even most of the time, you may even have a dog that is obedient 99% of the time, however if you want a dog who always listens to you and does as you ask then you need to win your dogs mind.

The second key to success is to motivate your dog. It is really important that you discover what it is that your dog enjoys both in terms of exercise and play but also in terms of a reward. If you can make the experience enjoyable then you will both achieve more and look forward to training.

Some dogs love to fetch, others love agility, and other dogs simply love obedience training, or swimming out into water and retrieve. At least to start with find out what your dogs love is and help them develop this, what I am saying is work with your dog. The other point to recognize is to make training enjoyable reward your dog.

The owner of the dog needs to know how to "operate" the dog, same way you can get into a car that's in perfect running order but if you don't know how to drive you won't have much luck making the car go anywhere. If the owner doesn't know how to maintain the training, the dog will soon become untrained again. Read more here https://tinyurl.im/koJZn

People seem to think that once a dog is trained, that's it. Not true. You must reinforce the dog's training every single day in some way. It's best if the owner and the dog go together to get trained. As a professional trainer once said to me "We can train any dog in 2 days. It takes longer to train the owners

Yes, we sure can 'catch' things from dogs. It is called Zoonotic when illnesses can be passed from dog to human. Humans can get Rabies from infected dogs, certain parasites (roundworm, whipworm, hookworm, giardia...), bacterial infections (ringworm, Sarcoptic mange...), etc.

no we cannot get sick from our dogs!
that's why they have hpp-p kennel cough boosters, and rabies shots.

if your dog bit you and it was rabid, yes,
you would get rabbies, but you would know.

We do not get the cold from our dog, nor do they catch colds from us.

We can get parasites from them, tape worms, round worms, hook worms, and fleas and ticks.

Good grooming and health care and keeping up on your dog's shot's annually and the kennel cough shot every 6 month will keep your do healthy.

keeping advantage or frontline on your dog will eliminate fleas, and therefore take care of the tapeworm problems.

you would have to eat your dog's feces,, poop in order to get worms, if your dog even had worms.

you can get flea bites from your dog, and i guess even a tick could crawl off your warm furry dog onto you.

so if your dog is well taken care of, no you won't get sick from it.

don't you wish we had annual boosters, so we wouldn't get colds or flus--- that's why dogs have the shots, no drug market and money to be made on sick dogs, we couldn't afford to treat them. shame they can't help us with colds!
go figure!! it's a dog's life!

I've never gotten sick from any of my dogs that i've had over the past 33 yrs. and they sleep in my bed.
