Why would parents keep secrets that could possibly hurt their children (if they find out)?

People (any person) keeps secrets out of fear.......
Parents especially fear their children won't love them and will think them terrible unworthy people if they found out just how
real and vunerable they are.
Have compassion for their fear......learn from this and be sure to pass on the lesson .....

You have answered your own question, they keep the secrets because it could hurt the child if they find out. Most parents will do anything to protect their children, most do not want their children hurt.

But my theory is if you don't do anything bad then you have no secrets to keep, therefore your behavior won't hurt the children.

But again I have a relative that I don't talk about to my children because of the things he has done the children know that he isn't a good person but they do not know yet what it is that he has done they are to young and wouldn't understand any way. This has been a dilemma that has gone on for centuries.

to protect their children. But the kids usually find out one way or another, and like you said, then it hurts. Parents often have no idea how smart they're chilidren really are They aren't just clueless little kids. It may be harder then they think to keep secrets from them. And if their kids find out on their own, they might take it the wrong way or jump to conclusions because no on e explained it. And that in itself hurts more.

They may just be trying to protect the kids.

All the kids have to do is sit down with the parents and discuss the situation with them. The parents might have good reasons for keeping it from the kids.

The kids might have misunderstood the situation. Maybe the parents forgot to tell the kids this information.

Possibly shame..they are afraid you will view them differently when you find out their secret. My mom died 4 months ago....2 months after that I found out my dad had another child while my parents were still married. My feelings for Dad have not changed but he has worried his whole life we would not accept this. Happy to report that we are all one big happy family now although I miss my mom terribly.

Usually parents do this because they think they're protecting their children.

Sometimes it's really not any of the children's business.
