Whenever I type something in my document it writes over the words I've already typed. How do I get that to stop?

After you press the "Insert" button on your keyboard, check the status bar, whether it displays "INS" on it. If it doesn't you can type without replacing the text existing in the document. If it appears on the status bar, press "Insert" once again
