From personal experience, it is very important. For me, drinking any amount of alcohol while taking antidepressants can trigger a manic period or increase my suicial thoughts and feelings.
I discussed it at length with my doctor, and she wouldn't say that I could drink. She told me it was my choice, but due to the medical evidence, she could not give me a 'safe' limit to drink. I was advised to abstain completely. I've found that my depression is much better now that I do not drink at all.
There is mixed evidence, and different people seem to react differently. Its a case of wether or not you want to risk it. Personally I've seen the damage just one drink can cause, so I've chosen to give it up.
If you want any more help/advice on this, feel free to email me :)

As a rule; doctors and pharmacists know what they're talking about so if they say don't then DON'T. From what I've been able to gather from work (I'm a carer), anti-depressants work by relaxing the nervous system. Thing is that alcohol can do that too. I'm sure I've been told that if you combine the two, your heart can stop.

It really depends on how you body can process alcohol and what kind of medication you're on.
Generally, in moderation is ok. Some people can handle this while others can not physically and emotionally. Alcohol usually intensifies feelings and it can make you "snap" in to a bad mood ver quickly. Thats why you should use caution when drinking while on anti-depressants.
Also don't forget about the physical damage you can do to your self. Depending on the medication, it might metabolize in different organs of your body. Some might break down in your kidneys while some might break down in your liver. Drinking alcohol is damaging to both of these vital organs. Drinking on top of anti-depressants can cause damage or failure in the long run.

In a word, YES! It's no news that SOME people in a rehab for alcohol abuse have tried that one. There is both a physical and psychological dependence for people who abuse/have a problem with alcohol. It's probably a combination of both that would have them drink the mouthwash. If they didn't have one or both of those dependencies, they would not do it, even once.

Well I am on Citalopram and have drunk before on them but it makes me incredibly ill and infact had to be carted home one night when my eyes were rolling in the back of my head.
Others on the same med have no problems but in all honesty alcohol is a natural depressant so it doesnt really help drinking on the pills as it counteracts what they are trying to do. I know its rough but try not to drink- have a glass of wine or summit but dont go over board.

The reason for this is that the alcohol could have an adverse reaction with the drugs minimising their effect. It could also cause other adverse side effects. There are some people who are fine taking a little drink with their medication, and there are others who have extremely bad side effects. I would consult with your pharmacist for the best advice.

If you look it up on a search engine, you will see that alcohol is a depressant. Your meds are 'anti' depressants, the goal to relieve your depression. So drinking alcohol with intensify your depression. Can also intensify any other effects of your medication, for example: sleepiness. I advise you look up this information, and also speak to your doctor next visit.

the rule is there for a reason - duuhhhh
you get drunker on much less far quicker when you are on anti depressants.
if you drive after just one drink you could be over the limit.
also as alcohol is a depressant it would be counter productive don't you think?

I'm on fluoxetine and it hasn't stopped me.
Think it depends on the particular drug and/or you and your mood. If you find that you are still down despite being on the medication then cut out the alcohol as it is a depressant in itself.

It's alright to drink when you're on anti-depressants just dont' consume to much. 1-2 drinks should be ok. My nurse told me the reason why they encourage you not to drink while on the anti-depress. is because it lowers your alchohol tolerance.
