Dude,
Talk to them, thats the secrect. It is that simple. The more you talk to them the more comfortable you become around them. It will not happen overnight, but it will happen. Talk about everything, dogs cats , the weather, local attractions, people you both know. You will find most of them are just as afraid as u- r. Time will fix that and u- will be happy.
