I was trying to find what in the beer causes the beer belly. Let's not talk about genetic stuff here. We want to just strictly discuss the content of the beer that builds up fat.
I came cross this list:

Is the calories do the damage or is it the carbs? What is better - a beer with less calories , or beer with less carbs?

Because, if you see the link with the beer list with calories and carbs, they're very similar to having a coke or any cola. In fact coke (8 fl oz) has 39g of carbs and 39g of sugar. and 140 calories. Some of these beers in the list (in the above link) has very less carbs and calories than coke.

Calories
More calories taken in than are used as energy, the excess is stored as fat.
I beer is 120-160 calories
1 lb fat is 2500-3000 calories
One beer a day will put on one pound a month if it is in excess of calories needed for body metabolism, through food intake.

Consider this: How many times do you sit in front of tv and watch a footbal game with a 6 pack of coke? Or do you go to a bar friday with your friends and order 3 or 4 root beers? Most people don't and thats where the problem with beer calories is.

Soda adds weight to you because of the sugar etc etc but beer is just as bad and your almost always consuming multiple portions at once, so instead of just 120 empty calories now your at like 600 empty calories...
