I starting having panic attacks when i was 11 when my parents split. At first i thought it was asthma, but i was told it was phycological. They went away when i was 13 & returned when i was 18, but 10 times worse! I couldnt even leave the house for a yr! I tried everything, all sorts of counselling/therapy, but most wouldnt *** 2me & i couldnt get 2 them! Eventually i dug myself out of the mess(it took me 12months)& i rarley have a full blown attack nowdays (im 23 now,). I am not afraid to go out anymore but i do panic in cars and on trains etc. I work full-time & have a 2yr old girl....but even though i go places now...i still cant go more than 5miles out of my town as i get really scared,& it brings the attacks bk. I really need some practical advise...my partner wants me to travel with him but he doesnt understand why i cant just do it (i have tried to explain)I fear he will leave as its making him unhappy cos he wants to take me everywhere with him, & i want 2take my daughter to.=[

You need to tackle this for your daughter too, she will grow up learning your fear if you do not tackle it. Get some hypnotherapy and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. They are both highly effective in dealing with phobias.

Hi there,

first of all congratulations for getting through your tough times and to suffer from panic attacks and still hold a full time job outside of the home is such an achievement, which you should be so proud off! I hope that doesn't sound condescending because it's certainly not meant to.

Have you tried any self help books to pic up tips?Paul McKenna perhaps? I think the secret to getting over any type of agrophobia or panic attacks caused by being in open or different environments it taking it one step at a time, and ensuring you have the right support. Make yourself a goal, say managing to get 5 and 1/4 miles away from home, take your time at this, don't beat yourself up if at first you don't succeed, (try, try again)..you can do this...your husband can't ever fully understand yoru condition, because he's never had it but i'm sure he wants you to get over this as much as you do and he will be there for you!

What about trying counselling again for your fears, talking can help and they may be able to provide tips, go back to your doctor and ask him/her to refer you...or check up local counselling facilities in your area.

I think you need a confidence boost too, perhaps take up a new hobbie or something that just makes you feel good..this should help a lot!

You are doing so well, keep it up, be proud of yourself, take one day at a time and remember SET YOURSELF GOALS! Please try again to seek help, your young and deserve to be free from these panic attacks!

Best of luck, x

in the the panicaway.com by joe barry he points out that the fear of having another panic attack actually brings one on, i suffer too with the travel aspect and the best thing to do is just do it, i know its scary and you think your gonna freak out at the thought of travelling but i done it one step at a time, each time a bit further out of my comfort zone, panic attacks are scary but they won't take control of you, there just an adrenalin rush brought on by fear, they can't harm you in any way
