What are some ways we can use to communicate with him? Certain whistles, tones of voice, etc.? He can't hear us call him when he's outside.

In humans, the high pitch goes first, so I thought it was the same for dogs. Anyone know?

The last part of hearing to go is high pitched, so it may help to buy a high pitched whistle and use a higher pitch when calling him.
Hand signals can be taught for when it's food time etc. They adapt very quickly.
When a dog is very deaf they can become startled when someone suddenly touches them so it's best to ask people to go to the front of him before they touch him.
Deaf dogs can lead very good lives.

I'm sorry to hear this i have an older dog myself and she has lost most of her hearing. I don't let her run outside like i use to. I'm afraid she might not hear a car and get herself ran over. you can always try a dog whistle. i would talk to the vet and see what they recommend. ma by they make hearing aids lol

Try hand signals they work most affectively with a deff or hardof hearing dog.

teach him signs that you will use with him all the time may dad's dog if 14 and completely deaf so that is what we did with him.

Put an emergency road strobe out to get his attention .
