It doesn't work because the coffee is causing parts of the electronics to connect that shouldn't be connecting. It may not be fixable, but if you want to try here's what you should do:
Open the remote, if possible, or at least open the battery compartment. If there is a back cover you may be able to unscrew it. Take out the battery immediately.
Blot any visible wet spots with a paper towel, and leave it open on the counter to try for a couple of days. Then re-insert the battery and give it a try.
This will dry everything out and reset the remote; it's your best bet for fixing it. If this doesn't work, the good news is that you can buy a replacement "universal remote" for about $20 that will work just fine.
Good luck!

You will probably have to buy a new one. If you want to experiment see if the case can be opened. If it can then make sure all of the contacts are clean. The sticky dried coffee could be the problem. You have nothing to lose by trying. If it can't be opened then remove the batteries. Rinse it off and saturate with wd-40 to remove the water. Let it thoroughly dry and see what happens.

Take out the batteries and let it dry. It isn`t ruined it should be fine. I`ve done the same and I also watered a plant over the top of my phone and soaked it, it worked again too.
