I was one of the lucky ones. Last September I was present at the bombings that occurred in Hat Yai - just got a small schrapnal wound.

Lately, I been hearing that it is escalating and they are targeting kids now and have even killed a few and attacked school dormitorys!

I understand the history of violence in these areas and some of the possible reasons for it (which to save time am choosing not to go into).

I would like to know if it is going to remain escalating to the point of Genocide or a civil war? (which is what I think)

OR

Do you feel that there will be peace sometime soon? (highly unlikely, IMO). Also, your thoughts and insight on this.

I am interested in hearing from Thais who live or have lived in the South or Expats who lived there for awhile.

Violence begets violence, that's my philosophy. I believe in negotiations and peaceful solutions. However, history has proven time and again, sometimes it need a forceful solution as well (at least in the short term).

The fault lies in the greed for power. If everyone is not interested in who does what or who gets the glory, there will be little desire to ask, demand and later forcefully take something. The Thais who have been staying in the southern Isthmus of Kra have for a long time been culturally and religiously associated with the Malays of northeastern Malaysia, many places sharing common interests and history. The central-based Thai government has been patient for a long time (historically even ceding parts of this place to what is now Malaysian states). Since whoever is in control at the moment is absolutely right, central-based policies and actions were pushed to all corners of Thailand. Resentment starts when mutual understanding and respect is not given. When push comes to shove, the oppressed started resisting, and the shove became a fight. Unable to fight one-on-one against government might, the resistance took to indescriminate bombings and shootings, creating mayhem and tying down goverment resources to force one-to-one negotiations which the government will not do. In addition, I believe the resistance, through their religion, has been greatly influenced and equipped by foreign 'religious' warmongers intend on destroying non-believers. Such is their thirst for power.

I don't believe peace will come soon. It is unfortunate. The violence will escalate to hit even nominally safe towns like Hatyai, Betong and Pekan Siam, and foreign tourists will not be spared. Seeking help from foreign (e.g. Malaysian) negotiators is a waste of time. The solution, if the central government is willing to act, is to scale down the strong-arm tactics (as in dealing with a rebellious province) but to work with the locals in treating such terrorist acts as crimes which the local community (not the government alone) must work against. Offer the hands of peace and be genuine in efforts to bring prosperity to the locals. When everyone benefits, who would want to wage war?

yes they kill more then 2000 thais already, but the muslims say+do notthing effectively to stop the killing.
do they expect thais will just sit down, doing nothing and see people being kill eveyday?

gov build school for their kids then the muslims burn it down! (not to mention that gov re-build it then they burn it down again multiple time.)
gov build the muslim banks for them n let the local Muslim run it then they bomb it last year.
gov let them open mosque + muslim school freely then recently polish found an M-16 in one of their school!
many of muslim in the area even carry 2 nationality (thai + malaysia).
gov never force em to select their nationality after a certain age according to the law (18 or 20yrs o, sorry not sure how old.)
and they said they been treated like second-class citizens.!!!

ask if thais in general or any minority in thailand can do or get what the muslim was offered?
what the f***ing second-class citizens is that?
any country in this unfair planet treat a second class citizens like this?
GIVE ME A BRAKE!

why muslim in the other part of the country can live with thai free of problem?
why every minority in thailand can live together peacefully?
who is the real problem here?
selfish people can never live with anyone no matter where are they living.
--------------------------------------------------------------

i do not thing it is going to be a civil war.
the muslim in the area is just too little compare to the thais as a whole.
if the 65 millions of thais really want the war, those coward Muslim will go extinct very soon.

those stupid muslim must thank for the thai mai-pen-rai policy, despite the ongoing violence from them, thais still do not open a full scale war with them.
what will happen if chinese in malaysia or indonisia do the same as muslim in the southern thailand is doing?
--------------------------------------------------------------

the 3 provinces including a big chunk of northern malaysia has been with siam for many hundred of years. the ancient city that the muslim referring to was not even have a clear piece of existent evidence "as a country"!

if people just take whenever the time frame that favor them and ask for the right to create their own country, then why not the thais asking for its land back from all of its neighbor?
if they do not give it back, no problem, invalid them.
more than 50% of their land was taken by the UK and France then gave aways.

why not everyone in the world do the same, then you will see war everywhere.
is that the muslim idea of fairness n peace? (at lease the Muslim in the 3 provinces thinking that way!)

Sorry there will be no genocide or civil war. Thailand has been a stable country for a long time. Also people love their king and queen to much to allow a civil war.

A few bombings and protests are not the end of the world. look there's protests all the time in america and bombings too. business went on as usual just as it does in Thailand.

I think it will keep going for a while. There is no end in site unless a peace can be brokered. But there may be many rogue fighters that keep going even if a peace deal is signed. What they need to do is to let those three provinces become their own country. Or, go back in the past to a hundred years ago and never take those three provinces in the first place, thus preventing a lot of killings over the years.

the Thai government is incapable of handling the situation in the south. it's trying to please everyone while the terrorist laughs at them. when they caught one of them hundreds of muslim women go protest in the streets for him, that he's a good kid and it wasn't him. and police under pressure will let him go. Or when muslims are killed they blame the army for the killing. Unless this government gets some balls, the situation will only get worst. Also I believe the Malaysian is helping these terrorist no matter what they say officially
