My great uncle's last wishes was to put his 11 y/o dog in the casket with him when he dies. Well, my great uncle just died and we are watching the dog. Its a very friendly dog and the vet said yesterday it has a clean bill of health. The funeral director told us the dog would obviously have to be dead and prepared in order for them to put it the casket with my great uncle. The vet told us since the dog is healthy, its unethical to put it to sleep for no reason. I mentioned to him that they do that in a animal shelter all the time when the animals are there too long. He told me thats a different situation. The family likes the dog and none of us want to put it to sleep yet we also want to fulfill our great uncle's last wishes. The funeral director is holding off till we give him an answer. So what do we do?

If your family owns a plot where your uncle is buried, ask the funeral director about the legalities of burying the dog's ashes alongside your uncle or perhaps having a small urn attached to his monument to put the dog's ashes in after he dies. It is completely wrong to put this dog to sleep just to satisfy your uncle's wishes to the letter. I'm certain that's not what he would have wanted.

I don't think your uncle meant for you to put the dog to sleep when he died. Keep the dog and love him/her like your uncle would. When it is the dog's time to pass away, then ask the funeral director for help. He can arrange for a container since it does not necessarily a casket. He can have the cemetery dig a hole by your uncle and put the dead animal there.

There are people who ask to buried with the pet they loved. So it is not unheard of.

And my condolences on the passing of your uncle.

When the dog passes on, put a small casket of the dog at your Great Uncles feet. I don't think your Uncle meant "literally" bury the dog at the same time.

Irregardless of the fact that your uncle wished to be buried with his dog, I am quite sure that if he loved his dog, he wouldn't want it to be euthanized just so he could be buried with it. Put a couple of pictures of the dog in the casket, and one of it's toys, and when the dog dies of natural causes, then have it creamated, and sprinkle it's ashes over the gravesite. It would be extremelly cruel to end the dog's life if it's perfectly healthy. This should be a no-brainer. You don't end a life, even if it is to fulfill last wishes.

I would do this...take the ID tag with the dog's name on it and dog collar and bury that with your uncle (it's something of the dogs). I would then buy the dog a new ID tag and collar. Don't kill the dog. I think unc just wanted something of the dog in the box with him. Also, at the funeral have some photos of unc and dog. Obviously, he loved that dog.

Let the dog live out his remaining time. If you were in the dogs place would you want to be put down because your owner died? That's like saying put our great aunt down.

Your uncle's last request is really inhumane and unreasonable. There are some people who think their dog will suffer and be miserable when they die. Obviously the dog is healthy and adjusting well, which is what most dogs do. If it were me, I would never do it.

Is this for real? Or are you just trying to get people worked up?

Your great uncle is either nuts or a selfish prick. Place the dog in another home so it can live out it's life. Guess what? Your great uncle will never know the difference!

It's likely that your uncle wanted his dog buried with him because he felt that no one else would care for the dog like he did.
Do your Uncle the final justice of keeping his dog for him and caring for the dog in the way that he would have liked.
