Because gods solved many mysteries of life. Back then, people made up myths and gods (the great powerful beings behind the miracles) because they didn't have science and such to explain life's workings. Gods have just been around for a long time and they were the ones that ran the earth so that's why they worshipped gods.

The Greeks didn't have the scientific explanations for things that we have, so they explained the reason behind what happened in their world using what they knew: Gods that act like humans. They assumed that since they could come up with no other reason behind why certain random things happened, those things must have been caused by Gods who were either helping people out or being vengeful for something that they did wrong.

The same reason we all do. "The world is a scary place."

In the case of the greeks, they were divided into city-states. A complex web of enemies and alliances. Their "gods" evolved along those lines. Each city-state, while worshipping the pantheon of gods, also had a "protector" god, that would oversee their affairs and protect them from their enemies ("Athena", the godess of knowledge for Athens, which prized education above all else, etc.)

For the same reason that every other people on Earth did -- the lore of gods and spirits provided a framework for understanding both the natural world and human nature.

Science now provides a better framework for understanding physical reality, but for understanding human nature we still haven't made any significant improvements on religion. Psychology is good at explaining what we do, but less useful in explaining why we do it.

the greeks based their ideology on principals from the ancient Egyptians. At the time potheism was the most popular form of worship.

they loved a good story, and myths to remember and portray their heroes adventures.

The Greeks empire was expanding and they needed a good religion to controll the masses and help with things of everyday life, explain things they couldnt understand, help with wars and pray too. controll the underworld and manefestations of love, vengance etc.
the fact that other civilisations had gods, they needed more powerfull ones to defeat them.

Greeks worshipped Gods because television hadn't been invented yet.

Greeks worshiped gods because they, one, needed answers to how certain things happen (i.e., life itself...) and two, they knew there was a higher power. (Sadly, they didn't get the right one. :(

For the same reason Christians believe in their god today: they needed a way to explain what happens to them after they die, and use that to gain power... People need to have some idea that something good happens after death, so they can get thru life without fearing it. It is their crutch, like the bible is today for so many. And when the leaders control "the word" and the "rules" for gaining the "good afterlife" then they can set standards for you (like churches do) and get tithings, punish you, control you.

christians and their buybull are great at that!

I imagine its the same reason Christians believe in their god today. They needed a way to explain the world around them.
